His Majesty King Charles III has cultivated naturalistic, layered and splendid gardens at Highgrove House for over 40 years, attracting visitors from all over the world who appreciate the beauty and respect for nature that the gardens hold. A pioneer of organic gardening, King Charles III’s commitment to sustainability is woven through the design of the grounds, from the wildflower meadow, excellent for pollinators and dotted with beehives from Fortnum and Mason, to a plentiful kitchen garden, the enchanting Stumpery garden and more. I was asked to write about the collection for Upscale Living Magazine summer issue, and as Highgrove has remained such an inspiration throughout my career, it was so wonderful to immerse in the beauty and majesty of the gardens and to see how this beauty translated into the fabrics, trim, and wallcoverings for the Highgrove by Sanderson collection. I find heritage properties so inspiring, and theres always an element or feeling that you can take away and bring into your own home, from the idea of adding a small wildflower section to your garden (even in pots on a balcony) or finding inspiration in symmetry of a building that gives a sense of permanence.
The garden rooms at Highgrove include the Kitchen Garden, Thyme Walk, Wildflower Meadow, The Stumpery and more. Each distinct space has a story which has been interpreted by Sanderson as an artistic collection of layered designs. The naturalistic plantings of the Wildflower Meadow with species-rich meadow flowers, is reflected in the fabric and wallpaper, showing pheasants, deer and foxes frolicking among beehives, a gift from Fortnum and Mason that are key in supporting the natural sustainability of the gardens.
